All about PKL Files
The PKL file type is primarily associated with Python.
What is a PKL file?
import pickle
with open('/path/to/obj_name.pkl', 'wb") as f:
pickle.dump(obj_name, f)
Python 3.x uses PICKLE filename extension (instead of PKL) to store pickled data.
How to open a PKL file
You need a suitable software like Python to open a PKL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PKL file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PKL file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert PKL files:
- Python by Python Software Foundation
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. PKL files are often referred to as Python developers because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- 7-zip (compressed data archive) by Igor Pavlov7-zip is a free archive file compression program for Windows. A PKL file saved in ZIP compression format can be opened and unpacked with 7-zip. This file format is classified as Compressed.
PKL format details:
Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Below you will find our evaluation of the PKL files:
PKL is a very common file type and is used by different programs with different formats. The file formats most commonly found in PKL files are:
- 40% of all PKL files start with the bytes 80 03, which are crucial for this file format. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The files are 700 bytes to 23 MB in size, with a median of 270 KB. It is a modern file type. The following keywords are characteristic: core and csklearn. Some examples of file names are model.pkl. Such files sometimes refer to data, train, dataset, classes, words, features, prediction and classifier.
- 35% of all PKL files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "80 04 95" at the beginning. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The file size is in the range of 570 bytes to 34 MB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. core and numpy. These files are attributed to result, dict, cookies, random, stylegan and list.
All other PKL files (25%) have no consistent format, often e.g. ZIP, GZIP, zlib, JSON, cco and cnumpy. The category is results, regression, label, output, diabetes or best. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your PKL file!
Technical Data for PKL File Extension

a pkl serialized object is a special file format by Python Software Foundation and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with PKL files
- Associate the PKL file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open serialized objects. Because only the current version supports the latest PKL file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Python Software Foundation manufacturer website after an available Python update.
- To make sure that your PKL file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .PKL file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
