What is an OIF file?

OIF files mostly belong to Olympus FluoView. OIF files are a native image format developed for Olympus systems. They use UTF-16 (LE) encoding to store not only the image but also detailed metadata from the Olympus FluoView FV1000 apparatus.

How to open an OIF file

You need a suitable software like Olympus FluoView to open an OIF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your OIF file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a OIF file directly in the browser:. Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. The OIF file extension is not common and mainly uses a defined OIF format. The two most common formats are as follows:

• 85% of all OIF files are associated with Olympus Original Imaging Format files, which internally utilize the well-known UTF-16 (LE) format. UTF-16 (LE) is an character encoding system for Unicode. UTF-16 files can be viewed in any modern text editor. These files start with the two bytes FF FE, the so called byte order mark (BOM). These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. Most of these files are 13 KB to 51 KB in size. The file type is old but is used even today. The following keywords are characteristic: Center Point Type="0", ChAutoFit="1", Grid="0", H Axis="C", Image Size A, [2D Display], Columns="2", Acquisition Device, AcquisitionMode and Acquisition Parameters Common. Files like these are sometimes connected to image, control, cells and dapi.
• 6% of all OIF files start with the bytes ‰SDB crucial for this file format. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. OIF files can be up to 8 KB in size, but are often around 6 KB - 8 KB.
