All about LSM Files
The LSM file type is primarily associated with Zeiss ZEN.
What is an LSM file?
LSM files come in different forms. The most common usage is for microscope images produced by Zeiss. These files use a TIFF-based structure to store multi‐dimensional image data along with detailed metadata about microscope settings.
- Microscope Images (Zeiss): This type holds data from laser scanning microscopy. They embed layers and acquisition details. Use the Zeiss LSM Image Browser or ZEN software. More information is available on the Zeiss website.
- Local Storage Manager Files: Some LSM files serve as game save files for products by X-Change Life, storing local game progress.
- Linux Software Map Files: In a Linux or FreeDOS environment, an LSM file can hold package metadata or system mapping details.
- Excel Macro Workbooks: On rare occasions, an LSM file is a macro-enabled spreadsheet saved in a ZIP-based format. These open in Microsoft Excel. Visit the Microsoft Excel site for details.
FilExt.com notes: Identify which program created your file before opening it. If it is a microscopy image, use Zeiss software. Game or spreadsheet files need their respective applications.
How do you open LSM files?
You need a suitable software like Zeiss ZEN to open an LSM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your LSM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a LSM file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert LSM files:
- Zeiss ZEN
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. LSM files are often referred to as Zeiss ZEN raster images because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- LSM Image Browser (microscopic image file) by ZEISSLSM files are image files captured by the LSM line of confocal laser scanning microscopes from Zeiss. Different versions of the LSM format exist, but all versions are extensions of the TIFF image format. LSM files can be viewed using the LSM Image Browser, which is also provided by Zeiss. Other programs can also be used for viewing LSM files, such as LSM Reader, which is developed by Patrick Pirrotte, Yannick Krempp, and Jerome Mutterer, and LSM Browser, which has been developed by the University of Cincinnati.
LSM file format details:
To view or edit LSM files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. In the following you will find our evaluation of the LSM files:
You will often come across the LSM file type. This predominantly uses a uniform format. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 80% of all LSM files are based on the popular TIFF file format. TIFF is short for Tagged Image File Format. It stores raster graphics images that support color depths from 1 to 24-bit, lossy and lossless compression and multiple layers and pages. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The files are 680 KB to 32 MB in size, with a median of 4 MB. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. Such LSM files store data about image, control, dapi, slide, zstack, well, projection, maximum and zoom.
- 9% of all LSM files use the same file format, which have the signature window.getData. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. The file size is in the range of 190 bytes to 98 KB. The keywords window.getData = function () { return [{"key":"(Saved Game A395D6EB-1B75-425F-A08C-63E866B6F337) Slot A","data":"WwB7ACIAcABhAHMAcwBhAGcAZQAiADoAIgBzAHQAYQByAHQAaQBuAGcAIABwAGEAcwBzAGEAZwBlACIALAAiAHY are typical for these files. Some examples of file names are X-Change Life.lsm or (Saved Game A395D6EB-1B75-425F-A08C-63E866B6F337) Slot A.lsm. These files are attributed to change, life, saved, game, slot and filename.
All the rest of the LSM files (11%) have different formats, such as Linux Software Map entry. These files are often connected to intensity, cell, bread, slice, xtrop or islt. If you want to find out what your LSM file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.
Technical Data for LSM File Extension

an lsm image file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with LSM files
- Associate the LSM file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open image files. Because only the current version supports the latest LSM file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Zeiss ZEN update.
- To make sure that your LSM file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .LSM file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
