All about PACK Files
The PACK file type is primarily associated with Java.
What is a PACK file?
Optimization: Since Pack200 was optimized for compressing JAR archives, specifically the Java bytecode portion, the resulting PACK files were anywhere from 7 to 9 times smaller. Aditionally, the files were usually compressed using gzip on top of the Pack200 compression, resulting in a PACKGZ file.
Compression: Pack200 is not a lossless compression. Thus, packing and unpacking would produce a JAR file that was semantically the same as the original, but class file structures would have been rearranged - this means that the resulting file would not be identical to the original. Pack200 reduced the size of a JAR file by:
- Merging and sorting the constant-pool data in the class files and co-locating them in the archive,
- Removing redundant class attributes, Storing internal data structures,
- Using delta and variable-length encoding,
- Choosing optimum coding types for secondary compression.
How do you open PACK files?
You need a suitable software like Java to open a PACK file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PACK file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PACK file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert PACK files:
- Java by Oracle
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. PACK files are often referred to as Java encodeds because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Apple II DOSApple II DOS is the operating system that ran on Apple II series machines; an 8-bit home computer which was one of the world's first highly successful mass-produced microcomputers products. However, the usage of the PACK file is unknown in regards to the Apple II DOS. This file format is classified as Data. Related links: Apple II series, Apple II DOS history
- CustoPackCustoPack is a program used for customizing icons, cursors, images, visual styles, and backgrounds within the Windows theme. The PACK file stores the created theme for Windows and can be installed and applied through the CustoPack software. This file format is classified as Data. PACK file format:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the PACK files is as follows:
The PACK extension is very commonly found and includes different formats for the applicable programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in PACK files:
- 25% of all PACK files are Creative Assembly game resource data files. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view the contents and find segments of text. The files are on average 99 MB in size and range from 6 KB to 1 GB. It is a modern file type. The keywords tables, PFH5 and PFH4 are typical for these files. A common filename is data.pack. Files like these are sometimes connected to rome, models, local, sound, alpha, audio, mordor, patch and rise.
- 10% of all PACK files use the ZIP algorithm, that is, a PACK file includes multiple compressed files. A PACK file contains 13 to 220 files, the average being 137. If you want to see the included files and images, simply rename the file extension to .zip and double-click it. The file size is in the range of 730 KB to 91 MB. The file name Data.pack is typical for these files. Files like these are sometimes connected to keil, cmsis, config and mimxrt.
All the rest of the PACK files (65%) have different formats, the following 19 formats exist: Git pack format, Snark Busters game data archive, FreeArc, JSON, SARC, CHUNK, RBXS, Rej, KCAP and Bazaar. These files sometimes refer to strings, shaders, attributes, ptmodel, general or settings. You can get all the details of your PACK file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .pack file to analyze" above.
Technical Data for PACK File Extension
a pack packed jar file is a special file format by Oracle and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with PACK files
- Associate the PACK file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open packed jar files. Because only the current version supports the latest PACK file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Oracle manufacturer website after an available Java update.
- To make sure that your PACK file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .PACK file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
