What is a TILES file

TILES files mostly belong to Project Zomboid. TILES files mainly hold game tile definitions used by the Project Zomboid engine. They typically list items and map components by specifying which portions of a graphic or sprite sheet should be used for various in-game elements.
Some files with this extension use an internal PDF format where the content is broken into smaller, tiled sections to represent parts of a 3D model. Such files are used with software like Silhouette Studio to help craft paper models.

How to open TILES files

You need a suitable software like Project Zomboid to open a TILES file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our analysis of the TILES files produces the following result:

As a file extension, TILES isn't very common and is primarily used by a single program. But the following two file formats are common:

• 70% of all TILES files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "tdef" at the beginning. These files contain text and words as well as binary data. TILES files are between 800 bytes and 240 KB in size. The file type was created recently. The files contain the following words: tdef, CustomName, BlocksPlacement, IsMoveAble, GroupName, Facing and CanScrap. The file name MethylTiles.tiles or newtiledefinitions.tiles is characteristic of these files. Files like these are about methyl, tiledefinitions, flags, morebuild, tile, rvinterior, posters, onifurniture, axebeard, pinups and doors.
• 10% of all TILES files save the data in PDF file format. PDF is short for Portable Document Format, is a file format to present documents, including text formatting and images, in a manner independent of application software, hardware, and operating systems. They consist of unreadable binary data. The average file size is 45 KB with most files being between 27 KB and 52 KB in size. Such TILES files store data about cone, segments, boxlid, sphere, rings and inch.
