Opening a WAR File
The WAR file type is primarily associated with Java.
What is a WAR file?
- Contents: WAR files are used to distribute JAR files, JavaServer Pages, Java Servlets, Java classes, tag libraries and static resources for Java applications.
- Directory Structure: A WAR archive's root directory contains the WEB-INF directory, which has the classes and lib subdirectories and the web.XML file. The classes directory stores all the Java classes that are a part of the application, and the lib directory stores all JAR files used by the application. The web.XML file contains information that defines how the web application is deployed. In addition, the root directory of a WAR file contains all files for the application. These files may also be placed in subdirectories.
The WAR file extension is also associated with a different file format, used by Konqueror. It is the format for a web page saved using the Archive Web Page plugin in Konqueror. The page and its images are saved in a single archive with the WAR (Web ARchive) extension.
How do you open WAR files?
You need a suitable software like Java to open a WAR file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your WAR file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a WAR file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert WAR files:
- Java by Oracle
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. WAR files are often referred to as Java compresseds because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- ALZip (compressed archive file) by ESTsoftALZip is a utility for file compression and archiving from ESTsoft. It supports several archive formats, including WAR, which is the format for a Web Application Resource file associated with Java applications. WAR archives are based on the ZIP format, and can contain JAR files, JavaServer Pages, Java Servlets, and other resources. This file format is classified as Compressed. WAR format details:
The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our analysis of the WAR files produces the following result:
You will often come across the WAR file type. This is primarily used by a single program. The file formats most commonly found in WAR files are:
- 80% of all WAR files are based on the zip format, i.e. a WAR file contains several compressed files. A WAR file can contain up to 700 files (mostly 12 - 220). File names are e.g. \META-INF\MANIFEST.MF and \WEB-INF\web.xml. Tip: If you rename the file ending to .zip and then double-click it, you see the included files and images. The files are often between 410 KB and 110 MB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: META-INF/MANIFEST.MF. Such files are related to service, estimate, snapshot, services, project, demo, dhis, sample and server.
- 3% of all WAR files are associated with Westwood game data Archive. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. WAR files are between 900 KB and 1 GB in size. The keywords WARC 1.7 are typical for these files. Files like these are sometimes connected to nukitashi.
All the rest of the WAR files (17%) have different formats, the following 4 formats exist: DICOM and UTES. Often described as management, openboxes, gcas, java, root, analytics, gateway, partner, stable, webapp, smart, bank or prop. Just click the "Choose your .war file to view" button on this page to find out what your WAR file is.

a war compressed archive file is a special file format by Oracle and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with WAR files
- Associate the WAR file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open compressed archive files. Because only the current version supports the latest WAR file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Oracle manufacturer website after an available Java update.
- To make sure that your WAR file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .WAR file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
