All about PDX Files
The PDX file type is primarily associated with Acrobat.
What is a PDX file?
- Collection: When defining a specific group of PDF files as a catalog, it is possible to create a unified index for that entire collection of documents. This index would be saved in the form of a PDX file and would be included in the collection. It would also come with a support folder that contains one or more IDX files.
- Compatibility: Embedding indexes inside their respective PDF files has been deprecated with the December 2012 releases of Acrobat, so only creating an index as a separate file is still used. Additionally, index files cannot be used online when making a collection public - only locally.
How can I open a PDX file?
You need a suitable software like Acrobat to open a PDX file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PDX file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PDX file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

PDX file format:
If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Below you will find our evaluation of the PDX files:
PDX is a very commonly used file extension and is mainly used by one program with a specific format. The following file formats are most commonly found in PDX files:
- 75% of all PDX files use the ZIP algorithm, i.e. a PDX file contains several compressed files. The 1 to 70 compressed files are called pdx.xml. You can see the included files and images by renaming the file extension to .zip and then double-clicking it. The average file size is 720 KB with most files being between 9 KB and 25 MB in size. The keywords pdx.xml are typical for these files. Files like these are sometimes connected to agile, fire, item, items, dummy, aaaa, validation, component, found, assy, base and dast.
- 15% of all PDX files belong to Adobe Portable Document Catalog Index 2. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. A typical file size is 450 bytes. The following keywords are characteristic: Created, 1 0 obj, %PDX-3.2, LastUpdated, NumDocs, Folders 2 0 R, NumDummyWords 0, Title, NumAttachments 0, StemmingLocale and Options 3 0 R. A common filename is Index.pdx. Such files are related to search, manual, vcgri, workshop, collection and master.
All the rest of the PDX files (10%) have different formats. These files sometimes refer to etiquette, catalog, circle, sgpdx, tcmdl, etas or pcba. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your PDX file!

a pdx index file is a special file format by Adobe and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with PDX files
- Associate the PDX file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open index files. Because only the current version supports the latest PDX file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Adobe manufacturer website after an available Acrobat update.
- To make sure that your PDX file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .PDX file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
