What is a PXD file?

PXD files mostly belong to Pixlr by Inmagine. PXD filename extension is associated with multi-layer image files created with Pixlr, a web-based photo editor. This PXD file serves as a container for all the layers, graphics, text objects, and effects in a photo project created with Pixlr. The final version of PXD files may be exported to PNG, JPG, or TIFF. Pixelmator Pro photo editing software uses a proprietary PXD format to save multi-layer images containing edits, effects, layers, and the color information of an image. PXD is also the filename extension of definition files used by Pyrex or Cython when compiling Python modules to C programs. Definitions stored in PXD files include variable types, function return types, and other C-type code written in Python syntax. eJay is a music composition software that saves some data in PXD files. How to open PXD files

You need a suitable software like Pixlr to open a PXD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. PXD is a very commonly used file extension and includes different formats for different programs. However, the following two file formats are common:

60% of all PXD files use the ZIP algorithm, so multiple files are compressed and stored together in one PXD file. PXD files contain from 4 to 14 compressed files. Common included file names are metadata.info, \QuickLook\Icon.webp and \QuickLook\Thumbnail.webp. Tip: If you rename the file ending to .zip and then double-click it, you see the included files and images. PXD files can be up to 280 MB in size, but are often around 310 KB - 21 MB. 20% of all PXD files are based on the popular zlib file format. Zlib is a compressed archive file format that supports several different data compression algorithms. zlib is also a crucial component of many software platforms, including Linux, macOS, and iOS. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The average file size is 2 MB with most files being between 110 KB and 11 MB in size. These files are often associated with template, image, banner, edited, thumbnail and pixlr.

All other PXD files (20%) have different formats, often, for example, Rave eJay sample audio, XML, Mac2OSX, GZIP, DOC, Copyright, cdef, from, BINA, bez and Static.
