What is a PRL file?

PRL files mostly belong to Vendor-specific. Files with a PRL extension are not from a single source; they represent a collection of specialized data files used in different industries.
For example, one kind stores heater configuration settings for PACOM devices using software like Sagemcom PRL Editor, while another version holds map data for navigation systems such as TomTom Navigator (TomTom) and has been used on Nokia Symbian OS devices.

How to open a PRL file

PRL file format:

Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our analysis of the PRL files produces the following result:

PRL is not a commonly used file extension and includes very many different file formats. The following file formats are most commonly found in PRL files:

• 8% of all PRL files start with the bytes xV4, which are crucial for this file format. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The files are on average 520 bytes in size and range from 28 bytes to 23 KB. Some examples of file names are bjunc.prl or buildings.prl. These files are often associated with shieldvisualdesc, visualconfig and imgr.
• 8% of all PRL files start with the bytes 05 30 32 2E 30 crucial for this file format. If you open these files in a text editor, you will see only illegible characters. The files are on average 9 KB in size and range from 2 KB to 46 KB. The keywords COM1, 1Cal and GPAS0096 are typical for these files. A usual file name is 20180601_TRA.prl or 20180601_ALL.prl.

All other PRL files (84%) have no consistent format, often e.g. SQL, JetDB, PIDROID, Prog, QMAKE and PRL. These files are often connected to image, fileinput, mobile, yemen, compiled, carrier, config or info.
