Opening RIB Files
The RIB file type is primarily associated with RenderMan.
What is a RIB file?
This file type holds instructions for 3D rendering engines on how to build a scene. The content defines geometry, lighting, shading, and camera details. It is often written in plain text, which allows for direct editing if needed.

How to open a RIB file
You need a suitable software like RenderMan to open a RIB file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your RIB file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a RIB file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert RIB files:
- RenderMan
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. RIB files are often referred to as RenderMan 3d images because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- 3D Reality Renderman Format Graphics
RIB file format:
Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our analysis of the RIB files produces the following result:
You will often come across the RIB file type. This includes many different file formats. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 10% of all RIB files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters " IB" at the beginning. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. The files are often between 1 KB and 18 KB in size. The file type was developed only in the last few years. An example of a file name is Riba_montedeipa_2020-06-01.rib or LAJATICO2020-06-01.rib. Files like these are sometimes connected to riba, montedeipa, unicreditb and effetti.
- 10% of all RIB files belong to Renderman RIB. RIB files are between 3 KB and 57 MB in size. The files contain the following words: ##RenderMan RIB, Export, build, version, ##RenderMan RIB-Structure, RenderMan RIB-Structure 1, Users and renderman. The following filename is common: vmdscene.rib or cUBE.RIB. These files are often associated with shape, camera, render and persp.
All the rest of the RIB files (80%) have different formats, such as DSS, bbox, CDE, Hea, HOOK, ALGE, FrameBegin and VRF. Sometimes used for asylum, menger, journo, chain, event or holes. Just click the "Choose your .rib file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your RIB file is.
Technical Data for RIB File Extension
The following listing is compiled from the database produced by the 'Associate This!' program, selected data from the main FILExt database and file extension information submitted by users.

a rib 3D scene description file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with RIB files
- Associate the RIB file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open 3d scene description files. Because only the current version supports the latest RIB file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available RenderMan update.
- To make sure that your RIB file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .RIB file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
