What is an RT file?

RT files mostly belong to Adobe After Effects. RT files can refer to multiple specialized file types.

Render Texture: These files, used in Adobe After Effects, store a radiance scene description that contains texture and lighting data for scene rendering.

Real-time Data: In applications like RasterTool, an RT file may be a container for raster data that updates continuously.

Rich Text Format: Although most rich text documents use the .rtf extension, some are saved as RT. They preserve text formatting and can be opened with Microsoft Word or WordPad. For more detail, see the Microsoft Word page.

How to open an RT file

You need a suitable software like Adobe After Effects to open an RT file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your RT file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a RT file directly in the browser:. The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our evaluation of the RT files looks like this:

The RT file extension is not widely used. Such a file does not have a uniform file format. The two most common formats are as follows:

• 10% of all RT files start with the bytes %SerializedFormat%@ crucial for this file format. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The files are on average 520 bytes in size and range from 330 bytes to 560 bytes. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. %SerializedFormat%@ and RTFilterOut. An example of a file name is outputTex.rt.
• 6% of all RT files start with the magic bytes 00 C0 79 C4 00 C0 79 C4, which are always the first bytes of this file format. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. RT files can be up to 280 KB in size, but are often around 280 KB - 280 KB. Some examples of file names are PRCP_CU_GAUGE_V1.0CONUS_0.25deg.lnx.20180601.RT. Files like these are sometimes connected to conus, gauge and prcp.
