What is an RDP file?

RDP files mostly belong to Network Operations Management by Micro Focus. RDP stands for Remote Desktop Protocol. The RDP format is used by Microsoft Remote Desktop clients such as the the Remote Desktop client in Windows. Remote Desktop clients allow users to control a PC remotely. They enable users to perform all functions that can be performed physically, such as using software installed on the remote desktop and accessing files and network resources on it. An RDP file is a configuration file that stores settings for a Remote Desktop connection. It contains connection information, session behaviour, device redirection, RemoteApp, and display settings. To configure and save a remote connection as an RDP file, launch Remote Desktop Connection in Windows by typing mstsc.exe in the Run dialog box or from the Windows Accessories folder in the Start menu. In the Remote Desktop Connection dialog box, click on Show Options and configure the connection settings. Then click on Save As under Connection settings in the General tab.

How do you open RDP files?

You need a suitable software like Network Operations Management to open an RDP file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. 25% of all RDP files start with the bytes re crucial for this file format. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. Most of these files are 800 bytes to 9 KB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as session bpp:i:32, redirectcomports:i:0, redirectclipboard:i:1, redirectprinters:i:1, drivestoredirect:s:*, redirectdrives:i:1, devicestoredirect:s:, prompt for credentials on, redirectsmartcards:i:1 and redirectsmartcards:i:0. Such files are related to cpub, rdsh, session, collection, apps and quick.

The remaining 35% of all RDP files are files with no common format, often e.g. ZIP, UTF-8, XML, full, auto, session, allow, desktopwidth and gateway.
