All about RTM Files
The RTM file type is primarily associated with FastReport.
What is an RTM file?
RTM files are also used in other areas:
- Release To Manufacturing files: In Microsoft environments, an RTM file may be a binary or XML manifest that comes with Visual C++ Redistributable Package components. More details can be found at Microsoft Docs.
- Ship Route Files: Some RTM files store navigation route data for maritime systems, used by route management software like that in Transas Navi-Sailor. Visit Admiralty for further details.
- Certificate and Rights Management Documents: In certain cases, RTM files act as containers for certificate data within rights management systems.
- 3D Animation Files: A few RTM files contain 3D skeletal or motion data. These are used in games such as Arma 3 and handled with editors like Raven Editor. More can be learned at Arma 3 or the Bistudio Community site.
Each RTM file is built for a specific role. To open one, it helps to know its origin. If it is a report template, use your report designer software; if it is part of a Windows development package, the proper system tools apply; if it’s navigation or animation data, use the respective specialized application.
Tips:
- Examine the file properties to see if there is any hint about its creator.
- Open the file with the expected related software.
- Backup the file before making any edits.
- Search online with the file name and context for further guidance.
How can I open an RTM file?
You need a suitable software like FastReport to open an RTM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your RTM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a RTM file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

RTM format details:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our evaluation of the RTM files is as follows:
Files with the RTM extension are quite widely used. This file type includes various formats for various programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 40% of all RTM files start with the magic bytes TPF0, which are always the first bytes of this file format. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. The files are often between 5 KB and 100 KB in size. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. The keywords PrinterSetup.BinName, TPF0, TppReport, PrinterSetup.DocumentName, Default, AutoStop, DataPipeline, PrinterSetup.PaperName, PassSetting, psTwoPass and PrinterSetup.PrinterName are typical for these files. Such files are related to rptapbdes, template, layout, bill, parameter, facwpd, report, sales and desa.
- 25% of all RTM files start with the bytes object , which are crucial for this file format. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. The files are on average 83 KB in size and range from 22 KB to 320 KB. The following keywords are characteristic: object, DataPipeline, AutoStop = False, PrinterSetup.BinName = 'Default', DocumentName, TppReport and PassSetting = psTwoPass. Files like these are sometimes connected to inventory, bescheinigung, abschluss, invoice, anlage and covid.
All other RTM files (35%) have no consistent format, often e.g. BIS Binarized Rtm animation, BIS Rtm animation, EXE, certificate, Route and Tdv. Tagged as microsoft, mfcloc, openmp, policy, vcomp, manifest or snake. If you want to find out what your RTM file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

an rtm report template file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with RTM files
- Associate the RTM file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open report template files. Because only the current version supports the latest RTM file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available FastReport update.
- To make sure that your RTM file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .RTM file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
