Opening an RTN File
The RTN file type is primarily associated with REDCINE-X PRO.
What is an RTN file?
Most of these files act as a quick-look preview that helps the editing software display a snapshot along with key camera settings. They store data used for rapid image browsing without loading the full high-resolution file.
- Thumbnail preview: A small image that speeds up media review.
- Camera metadata: Contains settings and technical details from the camera.
- Workflow integration: Optimizes the editing process in software like REDCINE-X PRO.
- Internal use: Meant for the software to manage and display content efficiently.
FilExt.com tip: This file format, abbreviated as RTN (standing for Redvision Thumbnail), is not intended for manual editing but rather as a helper file in complex post-production environments.

See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. RTN files are often referred to as REDCINE-X PRO data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.

RTN file format:
Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our examination of the RTN files comes to the following conclusion:
As a file extension, RTN isn't very common and includes different formats for different programs. But the following two file formats are common:
- 65% of all RTN files start with the bytes REDTHUMBNAIL crucial for this file format. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. A typical file size is 30 KB. The file type is very old but is also used today. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as REDTHUMBNAIL, (:3=<9387@H\N@DWE78PmQW_bghg>Mqypdx\egc, /cB8Bccccccc, Bccccccccccc, JFIF and cB8Bcccccccc.
- 20% of all RTN files use ZIP compression, multiple files are compressed and combined into one RTN file. An RTN file can contain up to 1 files (mostly 1 - 1). File names are e.g. routine_0. If you want to see the included files and images, simply rename the file extension to .zip and double-click it. The file size is in the range of 930 bytes to 2 KB. The keywords routine_0 and QJI-N are typical for these files. These files are attributed to routine.
All the rest of the RTN files (15%) have different formats, the following 4 formats exist: SmartScope. These files are often connected to position. If you want to find out which format your RTN file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .rtn file to analyze".
