What is an RW file

RW files mostly belong to WinRAR. A RW file is not a single standard type; its purpose depends on the internal format used by its creator.
For example:

RAR archive volume – The file acts as part of a compressed archive. Use an archiver such as WinRAR to open it.

Raw image file – The RW file may follow the RIFF structure to hold image data. This format is used by image processing tools like RawTherapee and relates to compressed image formats such as WebP (managed by LibWebP).

How do you open RW files?

You need a suitable software like WinRAR to open an RW file. Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. RW is seldom used as a file extension and includes many different file formats. The two most common formats are as follows:

• 20% of all RW files are based on the popular RAR file format. RAR is a proprietary archive file format that supports data compression, error correction and file spanning. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The files are on average 6 MB in size and range from 6.5 MB to 6.5 MB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. 1 (37).jpg, 8BIM, JFIF, Photoshop 3.0 and Rar!. A common filename is reg.rw.
• 10% of all RW files use the popular RIFF file format. RIFF files store data in tagged chunks. There are primarily used to store multimedia such as sound and video. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The file size is in the range of 230 KB to 810 KB. The keywords RIFF and WEBPVP8X are typical for these files. Some examples of file names are IMG00.rw.
