What is an S12 file?

S12 files mostly belong to Fresco CAD. The S12 file is a CAD drawing file that uses the Microsoft Compound file format to store design data in a structured, binary container.
It is primarily used for creating and sharing engineering drawings.

This file type embeds complex vector graphics and metadata.

It is linked with Fresco software for CAD designs.

It is also known as the MicroStation Redline File in systems from Spirit.

How to open S12 files

You need a suitable software like Fresco CAD to open an S12 file. The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. The S12 file extension is not found very often and includes different formats for different programs. The two most common formats are as follows:

• 60% of all S12 files use the Microsoft Compound File format, known also as OLE2 Compound Document format or Composite Document File format. This general-purpose file format provides a file-system-like structure within a file for the storage of arbitrary, application-specific streams of data. The Compound Document format is always starting with the bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1. The CLSID (class identifier of a Windows component object) is 5c1d160a-4c6b-43ec-b602-6ea59b0e9de5. The file contains several sections which are named like DRAWING, COMPINFO, PREVIEW, SummaryInformation, DocumentSummaryInformation, COLORTABLES, FILEMAP, ESTIMATE and FRESCOMATERIAL. The files are often between 610 KB and 15 MB in size. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. Such files are related to bestand, links, grundriss, blaschkoallee, ansichten, lageplan and kopie.
• 3% of all S12 files use the same file format, which have the signature SAN. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. S12 files can be up to 1 MB in size, but are often around 1 KB - 1 MB.
