What is an SBK file?

SBK files mostly belong to Scrapbook Factory Deluxe. SBK files are not a single standard type. They are used by different programs to store project data, backups, or even executable content.
For example, some SBK files are Scrapbook Factory project files. These use a Microsoft Compound structure or UTF-16 encoding to hold images, text, and layout data. They are designed for use with Scrapbook Factory Deluxe and related software. More details are available at Novadevelopment.
Other SBK files act as a container for backups.

OneNote/Samsung Kies Backups: These are zipped documents that store note data. They open with Microsoft OneNote. Check OneNote for more information.

SAP2000 Backups: These files hold structural design data and are created by the SAP2000 software. Visit CSI America for further details.

SQL and Game Save Files: Some use a GZIP compression to store SQL backup data or game saves (for RPG Maker 2003). They need the application that created them to be viewed correctly.

SoundFont Bank Files: Using the RIFF format, these SBK files store SoundFont 2.0 instruments. Audio editing programs like Awave Studio can load them. More details are at Awave Studio.

Animation and Other Data: There are SBK files used as Swiff Bytecode files for SWiSH animations (see GlobFX), as backups from Synology systems, or even as Windows executables related to software such as Snapz Pro X.

How to open SBK files

You need a suitable software like Scrapbook Factory Deluxe to open an SBK file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SBK file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SBK file directly in the browser:. If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the SBK files is as follows:

The SBK file type is a very commonly used file extension and covers a large number of different file formats. But the following two file formats are common:

• 15% of all SBK files are based on the Microsoft Compound File format, which is also known by the name OLE2 Compound Document Format or Composite Document File Format. Microsoft Compound File is a complex container format used by some versions of Microsoft Office and other Windows-centric applications. It has features similar to those of a filesystem format. The Compound Document format is always starting with the bytes D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1. The app name of an SBK file is Scrapbook Factory or Scrapbooks Plus. The CLSID (class identifier of a Windows component object) is 5c1d160a-4c6b-43ec-b602-6ea59b0e9de5. The file contains several sections which are named like SummaryInformation, BlockData, BorderData, Celltypes, Contents, FontTable, Pages, DocInfo, Spreads, Tables, Conts and Globals. Most of these files are 40 KB to 5 MB in size. The file type was primarily used more than 10 years ago. Files like these are about page, schematic, gzcs, backup, europe and best.
• 8% of all SBK files use the ZIP format, so several files are compressed and saved in one SBK file. The 1 to 180 compressed files are called FixedDocumentSequence.fdseq and [Content_Types].xml. If you'd like to see the images and files included, just rename the file extension to .zip and double-click. The files are 12 KB to 12 MB in size, with a median of 1 MB. The keywords Document/FixedDocument.fdoc are typical for these files. U1.sbk or U2.sbk is a typical file name. Such files sometimes refer to finman, spending, data, team and gimme.

All other SBK files (77%) have no consistent format, often, for example, SoundFont 1, MagicQ Show, Asymetrix data, JPG, GZIP, EXE, UTF-16 (LE), JetDB, XML, SAP, usr, openldap, Library, FSB and sIAAAAAAAAA.
