All about SPK Files
The SPK file type is primarily associated with DiskStation Manager.
What is an SPK file?
- Main Use: SPK stands for Synology Package file. Synology DSM operating system is used in Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices. SPK files are used by this DSM operation system as package files to store application installers and other software components needed for enhancing the base DSM software. SPK package files can be installed using DSM's Package Manager, which is found with DSM firmware 722 onwards.
- Other Uses: SPK file extension is used to store game files used by the virtual hunting game, Atari Deer Hunter. These SPK files contain game map data that can include several types of information related to terrain, plants, animals, and hunting locations. SPK files come pre-installed with the Deer Hunter game although there is a provision for editing the SPK map data to create custom maps too. Bright Spark, a circuit simulation software, uses SPK files to save electronic circuit design information along with the textual content related to the design. The user can dynamically modify the SPK circuit files to observe the changes in the circuit instantaneously. SPK files are also used by the encryption and security application, SpyProof! to store encrypted symmetric key data that is needed for protecting case-sensitive information.
How to open SPK files
You need a suitable software like DiskStation Manager to open an SPK file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SPK file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SPK file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert SPK files:
- DiskStation Manager by Synology
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. SPK files are often referred to as DiskStation Manager data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Acorn (spark compressed archive file) by Flying MeatAcorn is a raster graphics editor developed by Flying Meat for macOS, and it combines vector drawing with bitmap editing. It was built upon the previous Flying Meat image editor - FlySketch. Acorn is well known for its features like - image filters, a custom color picker, a brush designer, and diverse image editing tools. SPK file is a spark compressed archive. This file format is classified as Data. Related links: Documentation, Tutorials, Support, Acorn on Wikipedia
- Bright Spark (document file) by New Wave ConceptsBright Spark is a circuit simulation software package developed by New Wave Concepts for educational purposes that explores electronics principles. The SPK file is a saved document that contains electronic designs and written text used in design teaching. This file format is classified as Data. Related links: Courseware, Support
- SpyProof! (encrypted symmetric key file) by Information SecuritySpyProof! is an encryption and security software for the Windows platform developed by Information Security to protect case-sensitive data. It creates an encrypted virtual disk drive, implemented as a Windows device driver, that automatically encrypts all data written to it and transparently decrypts that data for any application if the disk is mounted. SPK file is used for encrypted symmetric keys. This file format is classified as Data. Related links: Info Page, Support
- SYNETSIM (spike firing output file) by Pacific Biosciences Research CenterSYNETSIM is software for quantitative and realistic modeling of neural networks. This software provides simple neural nets simulation using multicompartmental reprogrammable neurons that have realistic cellular properties. SPK file is a spike firing output file that contains two columns - time a spike fired and unit firing. This file format is classified as Data. Related links: User Manual
SPK format details:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Below you will find our evaluation of the SPK files:
The SPK file type is a very commonly used file extension and includes very many different file formats. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 15% of all SPK files are associated with Synology Package. They consist of unreadable binary data. A typical file size is 94 MB. The file type is very recent. The files contain the following words: INFO, 0000644, 0012664 and 0000041. Such files are related to server, media, plex, station, backup, synology, armada and aarch.
- 15% of all SPK files use ZIP compression, so multiple files are compressed and stored together in one SPK file. The 3 to 150 compressed files are called ConnectionMapping.xml, DeployMap.xml, PackageMetaData, PromotionSettings.properties, SubstitutionProperties.subprop and TransportMetadata.xml. You can see the included files and images by renaming the file extension to .zip and then double-clicking it. The files are 2 KB to 16 MB in size, with a median of 180 KB. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as PackageMetaData, __type__=meta __desc__="Export and PackageVersion. Some examples of file names are loc_eng_data.spk or Data.spk. Such SPK files store data about service, package, folder, delta, smart and sdtb.
All other SPK files (70%) have different formats, often, for example, Sparkup book, GZIP, AxDRM, VSO, APK, spk, conf, package, CHANGELOG and FsdGVkX. They are often associated with pack, investigation, ghostbusters, surveillance, active, bundle, noarch, field, music or secc. You can get all the details of your SPK file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .spk file to analyze" above.
Technical Data for SPK File Extension

an spk compressed package file is a special file format by Synology and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with SPK files
- Associate the SPK file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open compressed package files. Because only the current version supports the latest SPK file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Synology manufacturer website after an available DiskStation Manager update.
- To make sure that your SPK file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .SPK file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
