Opening a SONG File
The SONG file type is primarily associated with Studio One.
What is a SONG file?
They store the data of a music project rather than raw audio.
- Studio One song file: This type uses a ZIP-based format to keep tracks, mixer settings, plugin data, and arrangement information. It is managed by PreSonus Studio One. Visit PreSonus Studio One for more information.
- Ableton Live song file: This form is based on XML and contains composition and sequencing data, such as MIDI information. It is used within Ableton Live. More details are available at Ableton Live.
This file is not an audio recording but a container for session data.

Programs that open and convert SONG files:
- Studio One
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. SONG files are often referred to as Studio One audios because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- System 7 SoundMac OS 7 (1991) stored sounds in the resource fork of files or applications. Back then you could use ResEdit to access them. Sounds in the resource format (of type 'sfil') used before Mac OS X are no longer the most convenient format. To convert the sounds to AIFF, which has much better support by MacOS X (Mail, Alert Sounds etc), you can switch iTunes import preference to AIFF, drag the QuickTime version of the sounds (made by File Juicer 4) into your library and convert them in this way. Some games (e.g., Bugdom 2 game by Pangea Software) still use the System 7 sound format. Related links: File Juicer, System 7 Sounds on Mac OS X
SONG file extension format:
The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. In the following you will find our evaluation of the SONG files:
As a file extension, SONG isn't very common and predominantly uses a uniform format. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 85% of all SONG files use ZIP compression, the SONG file contains a number of compressed files. The average file count is 52 with most SONG files containing between 20 - 140 compressed files. File names inside are always metainfo.xml, notepad.xml, notes.txt, \Song\ and \Workspace\. You can see the included files and images by renaming the file extension to .zip and then double-clicking it. Most of these files are 10 KB to 330 KB in size. The following keywords are characteristic: metainfo.xml. Such files are related to music, autosaved, project, bass, beat and drum.
- 4% of all SONG files are based on the popular XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. These files are text files, so they contain words and text. The files are often between 22 KB and 140 KB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>, color, description, name, name_set_by_user, song version and uid.
The remaining 11% of all SONG files are different files with different signatures. Files like these are sometimes linked to random. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your SONG file!
