What is an SPH file?

SPH files mostly belong to sph2pipe. SPH files can serve multiple purposes. The most common use is to store speech audio data, which many programs process with tools like sph2pipe. This format supports speech recognition and sound analysis systems.
Other SPH files hold sphere map data for 3D model texturing. Some are used as project files in applications such as Scrapbook Factory Deluxe, while a few contain XML-structured data for systems like Sciemetric QualityWorX (Sciemetric).

How to open an SPH file

You need a suitable software like sph2pipe to open an SPH file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SPH file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SPH file directly in the browser:. How to convert an SPH file to MP3, WAV, OGG, FLAC, AAC, AIFF, ...

The SPH file extension is not common and includes various formats for various programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in SPH files:

• 60% of all SPH files are associated with NIST Sphere waveform audio. They consist of unreadable binary data. A typical file size is 3 MB. The file type is old but is used even today. The keywords NIST_1A, format, channel_count -i 1, end_head, sample_rate -i 8000, sample_coding -s3 pcm, sample_n_bytes -i 2 and sample_rate -i 16000 are typical for these files. The following filename is common: LDC97S42.sph. Files like these have the following tags: music.
• 15% of all SPH files start with the magic bytes BM, which are always the first bytes of this file format. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. SPH files can be up to 480 KB in size, but are often around 58 bytes - 190 KB. A usual file name is metal.sph.
