Opening SUB Files
The SUB file type is primarily associated with VobSub.
What is a SUB file?
- Video Subtitles: Most SUB files come from the VobSub format. They work with accompanying files (like .IDX) to display subtitles synchronized with the video.
- CD Image Subtitles: In some cases, SUB files are used to store image data from CD images, where the subtitle information is embedded as graphic data.
- Game Graphics: A smaller share of SUB files, such as those from Metin2, contain parts of game textures or sprites.
For further details, you can visit the VobSub website.
FilExt.com note: To view these files, open them with compatible media players (such as VLC with the correct plugins) or subtitle display programs that support image-based overlays.
How can I open a SUB file?
You need a suitable software like VobSub to open a SUB file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your SUB file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a SUB file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

SUB file extension format:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Below is our analysis of the SUB files:
SUB is not that commonly used as a file extension. This file type covers different formats for different programs. The following file formats are most commonly found in SUB files:
- 55% of all SUB files belong to DVD Subtitles. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. A typical file size is 5 MB. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. These files are attributed to downloaded movies, track, bluray, bdrip, xvid, dvdrip, shortbrehd, rarbg, yellowbird, dark and fate.
- 10% of all SUB files belong to Elaborate Bytes/SlySoft CloneCD CDImage. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The average file size is 25 MB with most files being between 15 MB and 30 MB in size.
The remaining 35% of all SUB files are files with no common format, often, for example, SubViewer 2. Often described as dead, subtitles or series. If you want to find out what your SUB file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

How to solve problems with SUB files
- Associate the SUB file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open subtitle files. Because only the current version supports the latest SUB file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available VobSub update.
- To make sure that your SUB file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .SUB file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
