How to open an SXM file

SXM format details:
If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our evaluation of the SXM files looks like this:
SXM is not a common file extension and is used by different programs with different formats. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 60% of all SXM files are Nanonis SXM data files. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. Most of these files are 730 KB to 8 MB in size. The file type was developed only in the last few years. The following keywords are characteristic: 290.0000000000, :ACQ_TIME, :NANONIS_VERSION, :REC_DATE, :REC_TEMP, :REC_TIME, :SCANIT_TYPE, :SCAN_PIXELS and FLOAT MSBFIRST. Such files are related to hopg and topo.
- 15% of all SXM files start with the bytes 04 53 58 4D 31 00 00 00 crucial for this file format. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The files are 550 bytes to 4 KB in size, with a median of 2 KB. The files contain the following words: SXM1.
The remaining 25% of all SXM files are files with no common format, often e.g. StarOffice Math document. You can get all the details of your SXM file by dragging it onto this page or by clicking the button "Choose your .sxm file to view" above.

How to solve problems with SXM files
- Associate the SXM file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest SXM file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Nanonis update.
- To make sure that your SXM file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .SXM file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
