Opening an XSM File
The XSM file type is primarily associated with Autodesk 3DS Max.
What is an XSM file?
They are designed for use with 3D Studio Max and work closely with EMotion Studio to process complex 3D scenes.
Some XSM files also function as vector image files. In this case they store scalable graphic data and can be opened with tools like XnView or Inkscape.
How to open an XSM file
You need a suitable software like Autodesk 3DS Max to open an XSM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your XSM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a XSM file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert XSM files:
- Autodesk 3DS Max
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. XSM files are often referred to as Autodesk 3DS Max 3d images because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- LEXIS-NEXIS Tracker
XSM file extension format:
To view or edit XSM files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. So you need a detailed analysis of a file to find out the format and the associated program. Our examination of the XSM files comes to the following conclusion:
XSM is not a commonly used file extension and mainly uses a defined XSM format. However, the following two file formats are common:
- 70% of all XSM files have the same signature XSM. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. XSM files can be up to 300 KB in size, but are often around 1 KB - 91 KB. The file type was developed 10 years ago and is still in use today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. XSM, Alias Maya, Workfolder, (regular commercial, Studio, regular commercial version and Alias Maya 8. Files like these have the following tags: attack, idle, tank, camel, moving, austrian, african, infantry, rider, anim and 3D model.
- 4% of all XSM files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "b'iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAAMgAAADICAIAAAAiOjnJAAAA" at the beginning. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. Most of these files are 1.8 KB to 1.8 KB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. iVBORw0KGgoAAAANSUhEUgAAAMgAAADICAIAAAAiOjnJAAAABmJLR0QA.
All other XSM files (26%) have no consistent format, often e.g. iVBORw. Often described as pikeman, static, shield, aerodynamic, spymaster, submarine, exported, generic, western, anvil, drive, stage, sword or move. Just click the "Choose your .xsm file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your XSM file is.

How to solve problems with XSM files
- Associate the XSM file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open 3d animation files. Because only the current version supports the latest XSM file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Autodesk 3DS Max update.
- To make sure that your XSM file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
