What is a GCODE file?

GCODE files mostly belong to Marlin by Marlin Developers. GCODE is the filename extension of a text file containing CNC programming commands used for 3D computer-aided manufacturing. A GCODE file is written in G-code (RS-274) language. It contains instructions for milling, cutting, roughening, and other operations a CNC machine or a 3D printer must perform in order to create a physical copy of a product created with a computer-aided design program. Other contents of a GCODE file include filament type, layers, dimensions, and what program was used to generate the file. Because GCODE is written in plain text, any plain text editor may be used to open it.

How to open a GCODE file

You need a suitable software like Marlin to open a GCODE file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your GCODE file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a GCODE file directly in the browser:.
