What is a GCODE file?
How to open a GCODE file
You need a suitable software like Marlin to open a GCODE file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your GCODE file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a GCODE file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

GCODE file format:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our examination of the GCODE files comes to the following conclusion:
GCODE is seldom used as a file extension and predominantly uses a uniform format. The file formats most commonly found in GCODE files are:
- 70% of all GCODE files are associated with G-code. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. Most of these files are 200 KB to 10 MB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as ;Filament used, ;Generated with, TIME, ;FLAVOR:Marlin, MAXX, MAXY, MAXZ, MINX, MINY, Generated with Cura_SteamEngine 4, ;Layer height: 0.2, ;MINZ:0.3 and ;Layer height: 0.1. Files like these have the following tags: cfffp.

- Associate the GCODE file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open 3d print data files. Because only the current version supports the latest GCODE file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Marlin Developers manufacturer website after an available Marlin update.
- To make sure that your GCODE file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
