What is a TREC file?

TREC files mostly belong to Camtasia by TechSmith. TREC is the filename extension of screen recordings captured with Camtasia version 8.4.0 or higher for Windows or version 2.8.0 or higher for Mac. A TREC file contains multiple video and audio streams captured on a computer. The video contains all user actions and graphics (presentation or tutorial) displayed on the computer screen throughout a recording session, while the audio content includes system sounds and sounds captured by the computer's microphone. TREC files are essentially MP4 containers and they may also contain metadata. You may convert TREC videos to standard MP4, MKV, AVI and other formats after editing. After creating a TREC video file, Camtasia automatically creates a new project (TSCPROJ) with links to the TREC file. Effects such as callouts, transitions, and other edits may be added to the TREC video recording from the TSCPROJ file. TREC videos usually contain presentations or tutorials.

How to open a TREC file

You need a suitable software like Camtasia from TechSmith to open a TREC file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your TREC file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a TREC file directly in the browser:. How to convert a TREC file to MP4, MP3, MKV, AVI, ...
