To find out what program is needed to open UCS files, you need to determine the file format. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. The UCS file ending covers different formats for different programs. The two most common formats are as follows:

• 60% of all UCS files are based on the popular GZIP file format. Gzip is a compressed archive file format. Gzip (GNU zip) is only capable of compressing a single file. The files are 7 KB to 8 MB in size, with a median of 680 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. %1X%.%2Y%. The file name RelicCoH2.English.ucs or RTPatchInstallWrapper.ucs is typical for these files. Such UCS files store data about english, relic, install, rtpatch, wrapper, graphics, chinese, options, utility and trad.
