What is a UP file?

UP files mostly belong to PKWARE. The UP file is not a single type of file but a tag applied to several update package formats.
Most commonly, a UP file is a compressed archive in ZIP format used to deliver software updates. Companies such as PKWARE distribute update packages with a UP extension so that the update resources are bundled into a single file.
Other uses include:

• Firmware updates: Some UP files carry firmware upgrade data for hardware like Hantek oscilloscopes (Hantek Update Tool) or for tools like the SL6801 upgrade.
• Renamed PDF fragments: In certain cases, a UP file may actually be a PDF segment, repackaged as UP for specific processing.
• Executable patches: There are UP files that contain Windows executable code (used by tools like PKLITE) to apply patches or updates.
• Legacy game data: Some UP files are connected to older game packages such as those from Ultimate Paint or similar titles.
• XML projects: A few UP files use an XML format, sometimes serving as update files or projects in applications like Audacity.

This extension is used to standardize the distribution of update content but does not guarantee a single underlying format.
If you have a UP file, determine its function by inspecting its header or by using the update tool provided by the file’s creator. Sometimes simply renaming the file (for example, to .zip or .pdf) and then opening it with the corresponding application can reveal its true contents.

How to open a UP file

You need a suitable software like PKWARE to open a UP file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. To view or edit UP files you need to know the file format, because it determines how the data in this file is stored. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. An UP file is used by different programs with different formats. The two most popular formats are as follows:

• 40% of all UP files use ZIP compression, so several files are combined and compressed into one UP file. The 13 to 170 compressed files are called jci_subord_cert.pem, main_instructions.ini, publisher_cert.pem, versions.ini.gz, \gracenotedb\f1.dat.gz, \gracenotedb\files.ini.gz and \gracenoterelateddata\execute.ini.gz. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as gracenotedb/UT, gracenotedb/f0000000011.dat.gzUT, bootstrap/UT and bootstrap/e0000000001.dat.gzUT. Gracenote_ADR_June2018.up or Gracenote_NA_June2018.up is a typical file name. Such files are related to gracenote, update, failsafe, reinstall and mpcs.
• 10% of all UP files are using the well-known PDF file format to store the data. PDF is short for Portable Document Format, is a file format to present documents, including text formatting and images, in a manner independent of application software, hardware, and operating systems. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The files are on average 13 KB in size and range from 7 KB to 47 KB. Examples of file names are appointment.resource.uP or fullTimetablePDF.resource.uP. Files like these are sometimes connected to resource, timetablepdf, attendance and timetable.
