What is a V3M file?

V3M files mostly belong to Machinist by Vectric. V3M (Vectric 3D Model) files contain 3D vector drawings for CNC machining that are created by Vectric and are available on the company's online Design & Make store. The files can be viewed using Machinist. Machinist is a free CNC software from Vectric that allows users to preview and create 3D toolpaths for CNC machining of models. It provides a virtual 3D environment to allow the user to visualise the machining process as well as to predict the quality of the machining output. V3M files can also be imported into Aspire and VCarve, which are both software developed by Vectric.

Because .V3M files can originate from different programs, they aren't universally openable by standard software.

1. Identify the Source: These files often come from CNC router operators or 3D designers, strongly suggesting they are 3D model files.
2. Check the Header: Open the file in a hex viewer or text editor to inspect the first few bytes:
   • "PK" indicates a zipped archive.
   • Unreadable binary symbols suggest a proprietary 3D model format.
   • Readable XML/JSON might indicate a configuration file.
3. Use the Original Software: You usually need the original program to open it. Try Vectric Machinist, VCarve, or Aspire. If unsure, ask the sender.
