What is a VAS file?

VAS files mostly belong to Visual Assets Studio. VAS files are not a single file type. Their use depends on the software that creates them.

Image Archives: Some VAS files are ZIP archives that bundle image assets. Visual Assets Studio uses them to package texture files, such as those in Horizon Zero Dawn.

Variable Lists: Other VAS files follow the Microsoft Compound format. In this case the files store data for video analysis software, like the variable lists used by Vijeo Designer.

How to open VAS files

You need a suitable software like Visual Assets Studio to open a VAS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. If the file extension or signature does not match the file format, errors will occur when opening or editing the file. The file size is in the range of 140 bytes to 350 bytes. The keywords AssistantInfo, DriveType, ExtraTriggers and UsedRelay are typical for these files.
