What is a VAS file?

VAS files mostly belong to Visual Assets Studio. VAS files are not a single file type. Their use depends on the software that creates them.
  • Image Archives: Some VAS files are ZIP archives that bundle image assets. Visual Assets Studio uses them to package texture files, such as those in Horizon Zero Dawn.
  • Variable Lists: Other VAS files follow the Microsoft Compound format. In this case the files store data for video analysis software, like the variable lists used by Vijeo Designer.
  • Settings Files: Certain VAS files hold configuration information. Victron Energy uses this format for its VE.Bus settings, which are managed with VictronConnect. You can see more at the Victron Energy website.
  • XML Data: A branch of VAS files is formatted in XML to keep account statements. Visma.net Financials employs this for financial documentation. More details are available at the Visma website.
  • FilExt.com note: The internal structure—be it ZIP, Compound, or XML—determines how to open the file. For ZIP archives, archive managers like 7-Zip can work; for XML files, text editors or web browsers may be enough; and for settings or specialized data files, using the original software is advised.

    How to open VAS files

You need a suitable software like Visual Assets Studio to open a VAS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your VAS file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a VAS file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.
