What is a VOL file

VOL files mostly belong to Netgen/NGSolve by Netgen/NGSolve. A VOL file is a data volume (archive) containing data used by video games such as Gran Turismo 4, Giants: Citizen Kabuto, Tribes, and Earthsiege 2. Although these archives all have VOL filename extension, they are saved in different formats depending on their developers. Another type of VOL file is a mesh created with Netgen/NGSolve multiphysics finite element generation program. VOL is also the filename extension of an image captured by CT/ultrasound scanners and other medical image acquisition systems. DxWorks and 3D Slicer can visualize such images.

How to open VOL files

You need a suitable software like Netgen/NGSolve to open a VOL file. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as <?xml version='1.0', JmVolumeVersion=1, Version value, tfStatZMax value, encoding='Shift_JIS' ?><JmVolume><Version, value="1"/><Attribute><tfStatRadius value="28"/><tfStatZMax and value="14"/><tfStatZMin value="-14"/><tfStatSkipLengt. The file name CT_0.vol is typical for these files.

The remaining 65% of all VOL files are files with no common format, often e.g. A-10 Tank Killer game data archive, Starsiege Tribes game data archive, Dalet Volume info and NETGEN Volume format. How to solve problems with VOL files

Associate the VOL file extension with the correct application.
Update your software that should actually open meshes. Because only the current version supports the latest VOL file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Netgen/NGSolve manufacturer website after an available Netgen/NGSolve update.
