What is a JNLP file

JNLP files mostly belong to Java by Oracle. A JNLP file contains a script which Java Web Start application deployment technology uses to download and run a Java web application outside the browser. The contents of a JNLP file are written in Extensible Markup Language in accordance with Java Network Launching Protocol. It includes information such as the server address to download the application and execute entry class. Java Web Start application was deprecated in Java version 9 (Java SE). Computers with older versions of Java installed can run a JNLP file when a user double-clicks the file.

How to open JNLP files

You need a suitable software like Java from Oracle to open a JNLP file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert.
