What is a WD file?

WD files mostly belong to WinDev. Game Data Archive files with a WD extension do not have a single purpose. The most common use, some, is as a game data archive that uses the zlib compression method. These files, made with WinDev software, store many game assets together.
Other uses include:
  • Game Data Files: Some WD files simply hold game data used in titles like Two Worlds and SpellForce 3.
  • Android Lock Pattern Images: some of these files use the JPG format. They contain images for Android lock patterns and may be encrypted by protection tools such as Perfect App Protector. These files can be opened with any standard image viewer.
  • Word Documents: A small portion are actually text documents in the RTF format. These are created and opened with Microsoft Word. More on this is available at Microsoft Word.
  • For game archives, additional details are at WinDev.
FilExt.com note: Understanding the internal format—a zlib archive, a JPG image, or an RTF document—is key to choosing the right tool for opening a WD file.

How can I open a WD file?

You need a suitable software like WinDev to open a WD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your WD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a WD file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

    WD file extension format:

The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the WD files is as follows:

The WD file extension is rather rarely used and is used by different programs with different formats. The following file formats are most commonly found in WD files:

The remaining 45% of all WD files are different files with different signatures, often e.g. JFIF. The category is back, front, pattern or backup. If you want to find out which format your WD file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .wd file to analyze".
