What is a WTS file?

WTS files mostly belong to WinPrint. WTS files may refer to two different kinds of data formats.

Windows Print Settings File: These files are stored in UTF-8 and use an XML-based structure. They hold printer configurations such as paper size, margins, and orientation. You can view or edit them with an XML editor or a text editor like Notepad++. This type is associated with WinPrint and works as a configuration file.

Compressed Data File: Some WTS files contain compressed data used for logging purposes. In this case, they serve as part of the Siemens WinCC Tag Logging system and may be processed with tools such as Topcon Tools. The file structure here will be different, and it may require specialized software to extract and view the logged data.

How to open WTS files

You need a suitable software like WinPrint to open a WTS file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The initial characters of a file are called signature, sometimes also referred to as "magic bytes". The signature can be used to infer the file format. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. In the following you will find our evaluation of the WTS files:

WTS is not a commonly used file extension and includes very many different file formats. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 15% of all WTS files are based on the popular XML file format. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. WTS files are between 9 KB and 50 KB in size. The keywords <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" standalone="yes"?>, <Settings>, <WindowsPrint>, PaperHeight, <OuterMargin>0.25</OuterMargin> and <PaperWidth>4</PaperWidth> are typical for these files. The file name WinPrint.wts or WindowsPrint.wts is characteristic of these files.
• 15% of all WTS files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "00 00 00 01 00 00 00 01" at the beginning. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The files are 4 KB to 2 MB in size, with a median of 410 KB. The file name 0000.WTS or 20180601.WTS is typical for these files.

All other WTS files (70%) have different formats, frequently e.g. shell script, config, Task, delete and STRING. These files sometimes refer to yolo, best, chargaps, invoice, netset or wddapz.
