Opening XLC Files
The XLC file type is primarily associated with Microsoft Excel.
What is an XLC file?
The XLC file extension is used by specific applications to store chart and localization data. Its structure depends on the program that created it.
Chart Files: In spreadsheet software such as Microsoft Excel and legacy programs like Lotus 1-2-3, XLC files are used to save chart information. They store design layouts, formatting settings, and graphical data that can function as standalone charts or templates. Some versions use a Microsoft Compound file format, which allows multiple elements like text and graphics to be bundled together.
Localization Data: Other XLC files act as localization data files. They are used in games (for example, in Pro Evolution Soccer 2016) to keep translation text and language information, supporting multilingual in-game interfaces. This approach is similar to an extended localization catalog used by specialized gaming software. More details are available on the Konami website.
- File Format Variability: XLC files may be stored using different internal formats, such as Microsoft Compound for spreadsheets or even SQL (as seen in certain SQLite-based chart templates).
- Software Usage: While Microsoft Excel is a common tool for handling these files, other applications like DeltaGraph and game localization tools also use the XLC extension.
- Access Tips: Open an XLC file with the originating application. Use Excel or compatible spreadsheet programs for chart files, and a text editor or SQLite manager for localization or SQL-based files. Additional details on viewing Excel files can be found on the Microsoft Excel site and on SQLite for database-related content.
FilExt.com tip: Always check the file’s origin to decide on the right tool for viewing or editing it.
How to open an XLC file
You need a suitable software like Microsoft Excel to open an XLC file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your XLC file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a XLC file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

XLC file extension format:
The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Below you will find our evaluation of the XLC files:
XLC is not a commonly used file extension and includes very many different file formats. But the following two file formats are common:
- 15% of all XLC files start with the magic bytes 09 04 06 00, which are always the first bytes of this file format. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The files are often between 2 KB and 30 KB in size. The file type is very old and rarely used today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. Page &P. CHART1.XLC is a typical file name. Such files are related to grafic.
- 15% of all XLC files have the same signature XGSL. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The files are on average 260 KB in size and range from 42 KB to 1 MB. The keywords XGSL are typical for these files. The file name ftslang.xlc or ftsteamnames.xlc is characteristic of these files. Files like these are sometimes connected to ftscredits.
The remaining 70% of all XLC files are files with no common format, such as DOC, SQL, XML, FTTL and Salted. Sometimes used for signal, stick, tmchart, range, aprs or hack. If you want to find out which format your XLC file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .xlc file to view".

How to solve problems with XLC files
- Associate the XLC file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open spreadsheet chart files. Because only the current version supports the latest XLC file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available Microsoft Excel update.
- To make sure that your XLC file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .XLC file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
