All about HDF5 Files
The HDF5 file type is primarily associated with HDFView.
What is an HDF5 file?
This format is used to hold scientific measurements, simulation output, and engineering records. It allows the inclusion of metadata so that each dataset can have extra descriptive information attached.
Key points compiled by FilExt.com:
How to open an HDF5 file
You need a suitable software like HDFView to open an HDF5 file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your HDF5 file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a HDF5 file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert HDF5 files:
- HDFView
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. HDF5 files are often referred to as HDFView data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Apache Hadoop (Text file) by ApacheHadoop Distributed File System, or HDFS, is a file system that is mainly used by the Hadoop applications to store data. It is built with NameNode and DataNode architectural systems to make such a high performing file system. HDFS makes it easy and convenient to manage effectively huge pools of data and allows for the use of analytics applications. HDFS file system has also been used for log processing, machine learning, for odds analysis by online bet companies, and also for data mining.
HDF5 format details:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the HDF5 files looks like this:
An HDF5 file is mainly used by one program with a specific format. But the following two file formats are common:
- 97% of all HDF5 files belong to NeXus HDF5 data format. The files are using the common file format HDF5. HDF5 is short for Hierarchical Data Format version 5. It is an open source file format for storing and organizing large amounts of data. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The files are on average 7 MB in size and range from 40 KB to 150 MB. The file type is relatively new. The following keywords are characteristic: TREE. Files like these are about weights, model, data, best, improvement, vdisc, neondstower, temperature and train.
All the rest of the HDF5 files (3%) have different formats. The category is experiment, eyetracker, psychopy, xception, emotion, results, epoch, beta, gfed or losc. If you want to find out which format your HDF5 file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .hdf5 file to analyze".
Technical Data for HDF5 File Extension
an hdf5 binary data file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with HDF5 files
- Associate the HDF5 file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open binary data files. Because only the current version supports the latest HDF5 file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available HDFView update.
- To make sure that your HDF5 file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .HDF5 file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
