What is an AGN file

AGN files mostly belong to Age of Empires. AGN files are not a single type of file. They are used in several applications.
For example, one prominent use is for game data in the Age of Empires series. These files may use the RIFF format to store scenario and configuration details used by the game.
Other uses include:

Project files for automation software (often referred to as Automgen or Automation Studio project files).

Application data files in point-of-sale and management systems (such as those used by Verifone and SAGEM's Morpho Manager Suite).

3D model archives that employ a compressed ZIP format.

The internal structure of an AGN file depends on its origin. Some use a RIFF container while others use ZIP compression or native file structures.
Tips:

Identify the file's origin, such as a game installation, automation project, or personal organizer.

If a specific program does not open the file, try using a hex editor to inspect the file signature.

Use the corresponding software (for example, Age of Empires for game data or Psion Agenda for organizer files) for correct viewing and editing.

How can I open an AGN file?

You need a suitable software like Age of Empires to open an AGN file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Below you will find our evaluation of the AGN files:

The AGN file extension is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 25% of all AGN files use the popular RIFF file format. RIFF files store data in tagged chunks. There are primarily used to store multimedia such as sound and video. These files contain neither text nor words, but only data. The files are 100 bytes to 8 KB in size, with a median of 1 KB. This file type was primarily in use more than 10 years ago. The keywords AGNXVERS, AGBDD, RIFF, GBLR and GBLD are typical for these files.
• 20% of all AGN files start with the bytes 01010 crucial for this file format. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The files are often between 25 KB and 790 KB in size.

All other AGN files (55%) have no uniform format, the following 5 formats can be found: AUTOMGEN project, Psion S3a/3c/Siena Agenda and ZIP. These files sometimes refer to diary.
