What is an APR file?

APR files mostly belong to ArcGIS by ESRI. An APR file is a project created with some versions of ArcGIS geospatial data analysis and visualization software. An ArcGIS project is saved as an object database which contains references to geospatial datasets, charts, maps, and scripts. Another type of APR file is an aperture information report used by OrCAD PCB Designer (previously MicroSim PCBoard) electronics design automation program.

How to open an APR file

You need a suitable software like ArcGIS to open an APR file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. APR file extension format:

If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. The APR extension is quite commonly used. The file itself covers different formats for different programs. The file formats most commonly found in APR files are:

25% of all APR files start with the bytes D10 crucial for this file format. These files are text files and can therefore be read using a text editor. APR files are between 1 KB and 10 KB in size. The file type is relatively new. The following keywords are characteristic: ROUNDED, 000 LINE 0, 000 0, 0.000 FLASH and RECTANGULAR. Such files are related to board, regulator and control.
25% of all APR files internally use the Microsoft Compound File format, also known as Composite Document File format or OLE2 compound document format. This file format is used by previous Microsoft Office programs and other Windows programs and stores the data in complex containers and sections. Header signature for the CFB format with 8-byte Hex value D0CF11E0A1B11AE1 (which looks like "DOCFILE"). The app name of an APR file is Avpak. The CLSID (class identifier of a Windows component object) is 00028701-0000-0000-c000-000000000046. Sections and streams in the file have names like DOCUMENT, INFO, VERSION, SCRIPT and QUICKVIEW. The files are on average 120 KB in size and range from 23 KB to 1 MB. The file name 2020-06-01.APR is characteristic of these files. Such files are related to vdis, generale and china.

All other APR files (50%) have different formats, often, for example, ArcView Project, Authorware Archive, ZIP, JSON, RAR, WordPerfect, AlignmentProject and xlayer. How to solve problems with APR files

Associate the APR file extension with the correct application.
Update your software that should actually open projects. Because only the current version supports the latest APR file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the ESRI manufacturer website after an available ArcGIS update.
