All about APR Files
The APR file type is primarily associated with ArcGIS.
What is an APR file?
How to open an APR file
You need a suitable software like ArcGIS to open an APR file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your APR file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a APR file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

APR file extension format:
If you can determine the file format, the associated program can also be determined. A file format is determined by the file extension and signature, so JPEG images have the extension .jpg and the first bytes in the file are ÿØÿ. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. So a detailed analysis of a file is vital in order to determine the format and the associated program. Our evaluation of the APR files is as follows:
The APR file extension is rather rarely used and covers different formats for different programs. The file formats most commonly found in APR files are:
- 30% of all APR files use the Microsoft Compound File format, also known as Compound File Binary File format (CFBF or CFB) or OLE2 Compound Document format. Microsoft Compound File is a complex container format used by some versions of Microsoft Office and other Windows-centric applications. It has features similar to those of a filesystem format. Compound files always start with the bytes ÐÏࡱá (hex code D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1). There is also a globally unique identifier 00028701-0000-0000-c000-000000000046. The file contains several sections which are named like DOCUMENT, INFO, SCRIPT, VERSION and QUICKVIEW. APR files are between 36 KB and 1 MB in size. The file type was used 20 years ago but is still in use today.
- 20% of all APR files start with the bytes D10 crucial for this file format. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. The files are on average 4 KB in size and range from 820 bytes to 11 KB. The files contain the following words: ROUNDED, 000 LINE 0, 000 0, 0.000 FLASH 0.000 and RECTANGULAR.
All other APR files (50%) have different formats, often, for example, ArcView Project and ZIP. Often described as player, proj or sina. Just click the "Choose your .apr file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your APR file is.

How to solve problems with APR files
- Associate the APR file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open projects. Because only the current version supports the latest APR file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the ESRI manufacturer website after an available ArcGIS update.
- To make sure that your APR file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .APR file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
