Opening a BOL File
The BOL file type is primarily associated with BIMobject.
What is a BOL file?
BOL files are container files that can hold different types of data based on how they were created.
Most commonly, they function as a 3D model archive that uses a ZIP-based format. In this role, the file bundles 3D geometry, textures, and metadata used in building information modeling. You can inspect or extract these files with standard ZIP tools, and specialized viewers—such as those from BIMobject—can render the 3D content.
Other variations include:
FilExt.com tips: Checking the file’s header can help determine its true internal format. For instance, a header starting with "PK" suggests a ZIP archive, while a "%PDF-" header indicates a PDF document. This variation means that the same BOL extension is used across several industries, so knowing the origin is key to handling the file correctly.
How do you open BOL files?
You need a suitable software like BIMobject to open a BOL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your BOL file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a BOL file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert BOL files:
- BIMobject
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. BOL files are often referred to as BIMobject 3d images because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Booasm (Compressed Archive Library) by Microsoft CorporationThis file format is classified as Archive.
BOL file format:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. However, different programs can use the same file extension, and file extensions can be assigned incorrectly. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Below is our analysis of the BOL files:
The BOL file extension is rather rarely used and mainly uses a special format. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 70% of all BOL files use the ZIP algorithm, so several files are combined and compressed into one BOL file. A BOL file can contain up to 4 files (mostly 2 - 4). Customary file names are DATA.IT.ctlgSL and FileInfo.dat. If you'd like to see the images and files included, just rename the file extension to .zip and double-click. BOL files are between 36 KB and 4 MB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as DATA.IT.ctlgSL. Such files sometimes refer to cooking, multiwoody, flooring, iguzzini, burners, baum, wall, height, street, bench, light, steel, stone, vitra, high, kone, pole and smeg.
- 10% of all BOL files are based on the popular PDF file format. PDF is short for Portable Document Format, is a file format to present documents, including text formatting and images, in a manner independent of application software, hardware, and operating systems. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. A typical file size is 130 KB.
All other BOL files (20%) have no consistent format, the following 3 formats can be found: .NET. These files are often connected to save. If you want to find out which format your BOL file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .bol file to analyze".

a bol container file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with BOL files
- Associate the BOL file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open container files. Because only the current version supports the latest BOL file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available BIMobject update.
- To make sure that your BOL file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
