Opening a BSDL File
The BSDL file type is primarily associated with ISE Design Suite.
What is a BSDL file?
- Use: There are many data formats that enable IEEE 1149.1 compliance and Boundary Scan Description Language (BSDL) is one among them. The language is derived from the syntax and grammar of VHDL (a hardware description language used in automating electronic design). It describes the boundary-scan architecture implementation and the pin and registers of an integrated circuit (IC) in a device using BSDL files. BSDL files can be used by various manufacturers in describing the device as IEEE 1149.1 compliant. These BSDL files enable customers to test integrated circuits with electronic designs. Boundary-scan test systems like XJTAG use the data from the BSDL file to figure out how to access a device in the JTAG chain.
- Features: BSDL file comprise numerous elements viz. Logical Port Description, ID Code Declaration, Device Package Pin Mapping, Scan Port Identification, Scan Port Identification (TAP), Instruction Register Description, Register Access Description, Boundary Register Description, Component Conformance to IEEE 1149.6, Configuration Register Description (IEEE 1149.7).
How to open a BSDL file
You need a suitable software like ISE Design Suite to open a BSDL file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your BSDL file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a BSDL file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert BSDL files:
- ISE Design Suite by Xilinx
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. BSDL files are often referred to as ISE Design Suite developers because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Notepad (Boundary Scan Description Language file) by MicrosoftNotepad is a basic text editor in the Windows operating system. The BSDL file format stores electronic specifications for Xilinx's ISE Design Suite in the Boundary Scan Description Language (BSDL), a hardware description language (HDL). It is stored in simple text format and can be opened and edited using Notepad. These files also use the BSD extension. This file format is classified as Developer. Related links: Notepad on Wikipedia
BSDL file format:
Why is it important to know the file format? This is the only way to find out which program to use to open the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our evaluation of the BSDL files looks like this:
BSDL is seldom used as a file extension and is mainly used by one program with a specific format. The file formats most commonly found in BSDL files are:
- 90% of all BSDL files are Boundary Scan Description Language files. These files are text files, so they contain words and text. BSDL files can be up to 180 KB in size, but are often around 15 KB - 67 KB. The file type was developed only in the last few years. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as File, Version, Description, Boundary, Generated, Scan, BSDL and Language. A common filename is IMX8MP_15X15.bsdl. These files are attributed to mxrt and lqfp.
All other BSDL files (10%) have no consistent format. If you want to find out which format your BSDL file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .bsdl file to analyze".
Technical Data for BSDL File Extension
a bsdl Boundary Scan Description Language file is a special file format by Xilinx and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with BSDL files
- Associate the BSDL file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open boundary scan description language files. Because only the current version supports the latest BSDL file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the Xilinx manufacturer website after an available ISE Design Suite update.
- To make sure that your BSDL file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .BSDL file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
