Opening a CIM File
The CIM file type is primarily associated with BMS Creator.
What is a CIM file?
Primary Use – Game Data:
Many CIM files are used to store game data. They often employ zlib compression to serve as a container for game resources. This design helps game engines and resource managers like BMS Creator organize and load assets efficiently.
Other Uses:
- HMI/SCADA Systems: Some CIM files use the Microsoft Compound format to hold GE Fanuc HMI data and configuration details, including DeltaV settings. More details can be found at GE.
- Camera Firmware Updates: Certain files serve as firmware update packages for Hasselblad cameras. They are used by the Hasselblad Firmware Update Tool. Visit Hasselblad for more information.
- Die Cut Layouts: A few CIM files contain die cut designs used in 2D cutting machines, produced by Bobst Mastercut and related to ArtiosCAD. Check Bobst for details.
- Data Messages and Price Lists: Other versions carry credit information or batch load data, as seen in environments using CIMPLICITY and qad ERP.
- CAD Projects: Some are project or dieline files managed by tools such as Cabinet Vision and CIMPACK.
Using and Viewing CIM Files:
FilExt.com note: Because CIM files are tailored to their creator’s requirements, you must use the correct software to open them. For example, game data files work best with game resource managers, HMI files need GE’s or CIMPLICITY tools, firmware updates require the Hasselblad Firmware Update Tool, and CAD files are best viewed with the appropriate design software.
How do you open CIM files?
You need a suitable software like BMS Creator to open a CIM file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your CIM file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a CIM file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

CIM file extension format:
A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). Nonetheless, different programs can utilize the same file extension to represent distinct file formats. Double-clicking on the file often results in an error when opening. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our analysis of the CIM files produces the following result:
The CIM extension is quite commonly used. The file itself is used by a few programs, each with its own file format. But the following two file formats are common:
- 40% of all CIM files internally utilize the zlib file format. Zlib is a compressed archive file format that supports several different data compression algorithms. zlib is also a crucial component of many software platforms, including Linux, macOS, and iOS. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. Most of these files are 2 KB to 2 MB in size. It is a modern file type. A common filename is Default.cim or 0.cim. Such files are related to parts, grtim, blue, information, simple, chara, lane and note.
- 20% of all CIM files use the Microsoft Compound File format, also known as Composite Document File format or OLE2 compound document format. This general-purpose file format provides a file-system-like structure within a file for the storage of arbitrary, application-specific streams of data. Header signature for the CFB format with 8-byte Hex value D0CF11E0A1B11AE1 (which looks like "DOCFILE"). The internal containers are called Compiled, Contents, gefVersion, ThumbNail and PointsList. The file size is in the range of 23 KB to 1 MB. Files like these are sometimes connected to screen.
All other CIM files (40%) have different formats, often e.g. VHABCIM and batchload. These files sometimes refer to pppimt, sndata or lens. If you want to find out what your CIM file contains, drag and drop it onto this page.

a cim specialized container file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with CIM files
- Associate the CIM file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open specialized container files. Because only the current version supports the latest CIM file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available BMS Creator update.
- To make sure that your CIM file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .CIM file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
