Opening an EDC File
The EDC file type is primarily associated with EnCase.
What is an EDC file?
For instance, one common type is an evidence file created by forensic tools like EnCase. These files record digital evidence in investigations and can include built‐in validation to detect tampering.
Other EDC files store configuration and data details. Some versions are built in XML format for engineering programs like EPLAN Electric P8, where they contain circuit or layout settings.
There are also EDC files meant for education content distribution. These make use of ZIP compression to bundle materials, sometimes seen as the ExamView Test Bank file.
An additional use is as an electronic dictionary file for applications such as StarDict. In these cases, the file holds word definitions and reference data.
Other varieties include encrypted documents. For example, one type is an encrypted PDF file managed through Kingsoft WPS Office; more information can be found at WPS. Likewise, similar XML-based files are employed to configure audio DSP equipment (for Biamp or Extron devices), with details available at BSS Audio.
There are also rare uses such as secure military documents or encrypted data containers created with specialized software like EDCPack.
FilExt.com note: This mix of formats means that opening an EDC file depends on its origin. Using the proper associated software is essential to view and manage its contents.
How do you open EDC files?
You need a suitable software like EnCase to open an EDC file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your EDC file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a EDC file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

Programs that open and convert EDC files:
- EnCase
See the previous paragraphs to learn more about the main application. EDC files are often referred to as EnCase data files because this type of file is primarily created or used by this software.
- Kryptel (light) Decoder/Encoder
EDC file format details:
If you know the file format, you can also find out how to open or edit the file. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. If there are problems opening a file, you must first determine the file format used. Our examination of the EDC files comes to the following conclusion:
The EDC file extension is rather rarely used and includes various formats for various programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:
- 40% of all EDC files are associated with Kryptel encrypted container. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. EDC files are between 12 KB and 9 MB in size. It is a modern file type.
- 10% of all EDC files are using the well-known XML file format to store the data. The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, webpages, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML defines a set of rules for encoding documents in a format that is both human-readable and machine-readable. If you open these files in a text editor, you can view and read the content yourself. EDC files can be up to 510 KB in size, but are often around 1 KB - 510 KB. The keywords <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>, <Profile>, <ProfileContainer>, <ProfileHeader>, <ProfileIdentification>ESCON Device Profile Escon</ProfileIdentification>, <ProfileRevi, ProfileRevisi, ProfileRevision and Type are typical for these files. These files are often associated with escon.
All other EDC files (50%) have no uniform format, often, for example, ZIP. Files like these are sometimes linked to data. Just click the "Choose your .edc file to analyze" button on this page to find out what your EDC file is.
Technical Data for EDC File Extension

How to solve problems with EDC files
- Associate the EDC file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open data files. Because only the current version supports the latest EDC file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available EnCase update.
- To make sure that your EDC file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
