Opening an EPD File
The EPD file type is primarily associated with EPD Viewer.
What is an EPD file?
- Encrypted Text File: Some EPD files store encrypted text data used by Encryptonite. This file holds secure information that can only be read using the proper decryption tool.
- Firmware Update Executable: Other EPD files are Windows executable files used for firmware updates. They are often linked to devices from Delta Electronics and require the specific update utility to run correctly.
- E-book File: A number of EPD files serve as electronic publications or e-books, sometimes called Electronic Publication Data files. They are meant for reading with dedicated applications like epdviewer. For more details, visit this webpage.
- Chess Position Database/File: Certain EPD files contain chess positions or databases. They are used with chess programs such as ChessBase or the Arena Chess GUI. For further information, check out ChessBase.
- Printer Driver Format: There are EPD files that work as printer driver files. Some versions produce an Electronic Paper Document format or an encapsulated PostScript Document for printing tasks.
- Embroidery Pattern File: A few EPD files store embroidery designs. These are used in software like Embrilliance StitchArtist to handle pattern data for stitching.
FilExt.com tip: If you have an EPD file, it is important to check its properties or source. Knowing whether it is an encrypted file, firmware updater, e-book, chess database, printer file, or embroidery pattern will help you choose the right program to open and view it.
How can I open an EPD file?
You need a suitable software like EPD Viewer to open an EPD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your EPD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a EPD file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.

- ChessDB (Extended Position Description) by Dr. David KirkbyChessDB is a database program used for storing chess games. A ChessDB format database consists of three files: .SI3 (index file); .SN3 (name file); .SG3 (game file) (those 3 are needed to make one database). These are all binary files. Some complete databases are held on the ChessDB web site. At the time of writing, one database (called 'huge') has over 3.5 million games. Other files used in ChessDB are: .PGN (Portable game notation, which is used in lots of chess programs, so is not unique to ChessDB); .EPD (Extended Position Description); .SSO (Search options file); .SOR (Repertoire file); .DAT (used on four files - engines.dat history.dat options.dat and recent.dat) to hold configuration information. All are text files. This file format is classified as Database. Related links: ChessDB Programmers Reference

EPD file format details:
Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. The file format can be deduced from the file extension and the signature. File extension, signature and file format must match; otherwise errors will occur when the file is opened. When there is a problem with a file, the first step to solving it is to determine the file format. Our evaluation of the EPD files is as follows:
The EPD file extension includes many different file formats. The file formats most commonly found in EPD files are:
- 15% of all EPD files use the same file format, which have the signature C3 0D 04 09 03. The content consists of illegible binary data, which can only be read and interpreted by the associated programs. The files are 97 bytes to 390 bytes in size, with a median of 180 bytes. This file type is based on cutting-edge technology. The file name note.epd or test.epd is characteristic of these files.
- 15% of all EPD files are based on the well-known EXE file format. EXE is the abbreviation for executable and is the standard executable file format on Windows. The format can be identified by the letters "MZ" at the beginning. Executable files can also be used to distribute viruses and other types of malicious software (malware). The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. EPD files can be up to 38 MB in size, but are often around 1 MB - 30 MB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. !This program cannot be run in DOS mode. A common filename is PC_Full_Install_Oct2020.epd or EP40_Documentation_Apr2021.epd. These files can be linked to install, upgrade and documentation.
All other EPD files (70%) have different formats, frequently e.g. rnbqk. These files sometimes refer to mill, moves, notes or noob. Drag & drop your file here to see the file format and a preview of your EPD file!
Technical Data for EPD File Extension
an epd EPD Viewer file is a special file format and should only be edited and saved with the appropriate software.
How to solve problems with EPD files
- Associate the EPD file extension with the correct application.
- Update your software that should actually open EPD Viewer files. Because only the current version supports the latest EPD file format. Search, therefore, e.g. on the manufacturer website after an available EPD Viewer update.
- To make sure that your EPD file is not corrupted or virus-infected, get the file again and scan it with Google's virustotal.com.
- Click here to open your .EPD file online - secure, fast, and no downloads needed.
