What is an FDE file?

FDE files mostly belong to FormDocs. The FDE files are used in different software environments. Some files are FormFast documents meant for structured form data, while others are XML files used in Microsoft Visual FoxPro environments. A number also store CAD drawing data via the Fujitsu Drawing Editor or Festo Design Tool, and a few serve as ODBO-link databases for connecting data.

XML Data File: A number of FDE files use XML formatting to hold database information related to Visual FoxPro. They can be viewed with a text editor or within the Visual FoxPro environment.

CAD Drawing File: Some files store drawing information from the Fujitsu Drawing Editor. They are a CAD drawing file format and may be opened with compatible CAD software such as the Festo Design Tool.

ODBO-Link Database File: A smaller group uses the ODBO-link method to manage database connections. Appropriate database connectivity tools are needed to open these.

How to open FDE files

You need a suitable software like FormDocs to open an FDE file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your FDE file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a FDE file directly in the browser:. FDE file format:

Each file has a definite file format, that is, how the stored data is arranged in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. In the following you will find our evaluation of the FDE files:

FDE is not that commonly used as a file extension. This file type includes various formats for various programs. However, the following two file formats are common:

• 30% of all FDE files have the same signature $DABNDF$$BVer$. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The average file size is 440 KB with most files being between 100 KB and 6 MB in size. The file type was developed only in the last few years. The following keywords are characteristic: $BFHead$, $DABNDF$$BVer$ and Users.
• 25% of all FDE files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "Form " at the beginning. The contents of these files are easily readable with a text editor. The files are often between 19 KB and 840 KB in size. The keywords Form, True, Rect, False, Courier New, Text and 13619151 are typical for these files. Examples of file names are MAR 2020-06-01.fde. These files are attributed to statement, invoice and unit, and usually contain person-related data.

All the rest of the FDE files (45%) have different formats, often e.g. XML and ODBO. These files are often connected to clarative, export, fiche, apotex, docx, line or shhq. If you want to find out which format your FDE file belongs to, just click on the button "Choose your .fde file to analyze".
