The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. Each file format has a unique extension and almost always a unique signature. For example, Microsoft Word documents have the extension .docx and the signature (usually the first 3 characters in this file) PK. The GIB file extension is rather rarely used and is primarily used by a single program. The two most common formats are as follows:

• 75% of all GIB files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "BIGF" at the beginning. GIB files can be up to 390 MB in size, but are often around 4 MB - 180 MB. The file type is relatively new. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as BIGF, Animation2D, Data\INI\Armor.ini, CommandButton and Audio. The following filename is common: !Shw_ini.gib or !Rotr_INI.gib. These files are attributed to rotr, music, audio, intrnl, challenge, patch, voice and maps.
• 8% of all GIB files start with the bytes [´ëȸ¸í ", which are crucial for this file format. The contents of these files are partially readable by a human. GIB files are between 370 bytes and 100 KB in size.
