What is a GRID file?

GRID files mostly belong to Surfer. GRID files are files that store data in a row and column layout. They are used in several different fields, and the data inside is organized as a grid.

Cross-stitch patterns: These files may contain design instructions for cross-stitch projects, managed by programs such as StitchBuddy or PCStitch.

Geospatial data (ASCII grid): In many cases, a GRID file holds numeric values for surface mapping and spatial analysis and is used by GIS applications like Surfer following the ESRI GRID standard. For more details, visit Golden Software.

Geomodeling data: Some GRID files carry grid-based data for geoscience models used in applications like FRES and Datamine Studio.

XML grid data: Other files use an XML structure to hold grid data, such as those managed by OpenGear iGrid.

How to open GRID files

You need a suitable software like Surfer to open a GRID file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your GRID file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a GRID file directly in the browser:. GRID file extension format:

A file format defines how the data in the file is structured. The file format can be determined based on the file extension and the signature (the first few characters of a file). If the file extension does not match the file format, double-clicking on the file will cause an error upon opening. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. The GRID file extension includes various formats for various programs. The two most popular formats are as follows:

• 20% of all GRID files use the same file format, which have the signature DESGCS. The contents of these files can even be read by a human. A typical file size is 4 KB. The file type is relatively new. The files contain the following words: DESGCSk, ffffff, farbtasticPickerPLK, ffffd7 and ff0000. Examples of file names are pattern.grid.
• 20% of all GRID files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "ncols " at the beginning. The content consists of readable text data, which can be read using a text editor. The files are on average 3 MB in size and range from 2 MB to 4 MB. The keywords cellsize 0.0500, nodata_value 99999.90, xllcenter 112.0000, ncols 886, nrows 691, yllcenter -44.5000 and 0.0 0.0 0.0 are typical for these files. The file name latest.grid or IDCKZDDAT0.solar.daily.grid is characteristic of these files. Files like these have the following tags: daily, solar, idckzrda and rainfall.

All other GRID files (60%) have different formats, the following 6 formats can be found: GridMove grid template and XML. These files sometimes refer to cartesian, network, summary, taquin or topo.
