Every file has a defined file format, i.e. how the data is arranged in the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. Exact knowledge of the format is therefore important in order to solve problems occurring in files. Our evaluation of the MEA files is as follows:

The file type with the extension 'MEA' is used by different programs with different formats. The two most popular formats are as follows:

• 25% of all MEA files use the same file format, which have the signature 46 07 02 00 00 00 00 00. They consist of illegible, cryptic characters. The files are often between 33 KB and 2 MB in size. • 15% of all MEA files start with the bytes 10 00 01 00, which are crucial for this file format. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The files are often between 4 KB and 450 KB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. 1 deg. A usual file name is 00000000.mea.
