What is a MUD file?

MUD files mostly belong to Mudbox by Autodesk. MUD is the native file format used to store 3D scenes created using Mudbox, a multi-platform software for sculpting and rendering 3D game characters. MUD models contain multiple layers of paintings and sculptures that make up a 3D image/model. It also contains texture data, cameras, materials, and visual effects such as lighting. Models stored in other 3D formats like as OBJ can be imported into a Mudbox 3D scene (MUD) file. The MUD file extension is also used to store data created by Act!, a CRM software available for Windows platforms. zMUD, a MUD/Telnet client used on Windows operating systems stores its settings in MUD files. Also Textease, an a software used for teaching ICT courses stores databases created alongside TE files in MUD files. These kinds of MUD files allow multiple students to perform CRUD operations on a single database file.

How to open a MUD file

You need a suitable software like Mudbox to open a MUD file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your MUD file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a MUD file directly in the browser:. Just drag the file onto this browser window and drop it.
