NUT file format:
The file format determines how the data is stored in the file. The first characters in a file identify the file format, for example, HTML files start with the bytes <html>. However, different programs can use the same file extension. Furthermore, a file extension can be renamed incorrectly and double-clicking on it will then display an error when it is opened. You will often come across the NUT file type. This includes very many different file formats. The two most common formats are as follows:
- 15% of all NUT files have the same signature NT. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The files are often between 18 KB and 5 MB in size. It is a modern file type. The following keywords are characteristic: GIDX and NTP3. The following filename is common: model.nut. These files are often associated with captain, episode, rosetta, stock, chrn, icon, regcommon, mario and tips.
- 10% of all NUT files start with the magic bytes úúRIQS, which are always the first bytes of this file format. These are binary files, so they do not contain words or text. The file size is in the range of 560 bytes to 30 KB. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. RIQS, TRAP, mainTRAP, REWARDS, config, name, dynamic and pgp_config. The file name Rewards.nut or resources.nut is typical for these files. Files like these have the following tags: config, level, info, profile and strings.
All the rest of the NUT files (75%) have different formats, the following 17 formats can be found: NUT Open Container Format, Smush Animation format, GZIP, Source, this, local, SCRP, global, IncludeScript, print, NUTC and BFBR.
