What is a PBF file?

PBF files mostly belong to Osmium. PBF files have several uses. The most common use is to store OpenStreetMap data in a compact binary format that uses Google’s Protocol Buffers. This makes it easier and faster to process large map databases.
Here are some specific uses:

How to open a PBF file

You need a suitable software like Osmium to open a PBF file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. If you cannot open your PBF file correctly, try to right-click or long-press the file. Then click "Open with" and choose an application. You can also display a PBF file directly in the browser:. • 35% of all PBF files are OpenStreetMap PBF data files. The contents of these files cannot be read by a human; only a computer program can interpret the data. The files are often between 2 MB and 670 MB in size. The file type is a fairly new file format. The following keywords are characteristic: OSMHeader, OSMData, DenseNodes, OsmSchema-V0.6", http://download.geofabrik.de, osmium/1.8.0 and updates. • 4% of all PBF files use the same file format, which can be identified by the letters "IPCr" at the beginning. They consist of unreadable binary data. The average file size is 180 KB with most files being between 84 KB and 360 KB in size. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. IPCr>. Files like these are sometimes connected to fotokniha, and often include person-related information.

All other PBF files (61%) have no uniform format, often e.g. Sprite Backup image, Paragon Backup Format image, PowerBackup Archive File, GZIP and ZIP.
