What is a PT3 file?

PT3 files mostly belong to Topcon Tools. A PT3 file is not a single, uniform file type but a container for different kinds of data based on its source.
For many users, the primary use of a PT3 file is as a survey data file produced by Topcon total stations. This file holds coordinate and measurement information and is best opened with Topcon Tools. More details can be found at Topcon Positioning.
Other uses of the PT3 extension include:

Music Modules: Files used by tracker programs such as the ProTracker 3 module and the Vortex Tracker II module, which store sample-based music data. Users should employ appropriate music tracker software, with additional resources available at Modland or SoftSynth.

Time-correlated Data: Files generated by PicoHarp 300 systems to store time-correlated or histogram data. Such files need PicoHarp Software from PicoQuant (PicoQuant).

How to open PT3 files

You need a suitable software like Topcon Tools to open a PT3 file. Without proper software you will receive a Windows message "How do you want to open this file?" or "Windows cannot open this file" or a similar Mac/iPhone/Android alert. This is a text file, containing tag-formatting. Page-layout data is located in the tail part of a file, after char(26). Protex started in 1984 as a DOS program and Protext///e came about when Clipper 87 became available. In 1992, HTML-output capabilities were added. Protext///e became a member of a complete set of small business-programs (Root Data Management, Billing, Accounting, ERP, CRM, a.o.) sold as OfficeNet. DBFsvr, the newest incarnation, can be operated in all environments, OSes and Webservers. Protext///e is no longer sold; use DBFsvr for these files.

PT3 file extension format:

The file format, which is the arrangement and type of data in a file, determines which program can open the file. Often, the file format can be deduced from the file extension or the initial bytes (called the signature). Frequently, however, one file extension is used by different programs for different file formats, and one file format for different file extensions. Knowledge is power - this also applies when dealing with unknown or faulty files. Our evaluation of the PT3 files looks like this:

PT3 is rarely used as a file extension and includes different formats for different programs. However, the following two file formats are common:

60% of all PT3 files use the same file format, which have the signature Topcon PT3. They consist of unreadable binary data. The average file size is 5 KB with most files being between 1 KB and 69 KB in size. The file type was created 20 years ago but is still used today. Several words can almost always be found in the files, e.g. Topcon PT3. These files are often associated with points and topo.
10% of all PT3 files are associated with Spectrum Pro Tracker 3 chiptune. These files are binary files, so they do not contain text, but only cryptic characters. The average file size is 5 KB with most files being between 1 KB and 7 KB in size. Certain words are almost always found in the files, such as ProTracker 3 and compilation.
